Connecticut Sun’s Greene joins girls for cupcakes, mentoring

MIDDLETOWN >> Macdonough Elementary School fourth-grade girls took a field trip to a local patisserie to assemble cupcakes with a professional basketball player Monday.
Five Macdonough fourth-graders, chosen for having exhibited leadership, frosted cookies-and-cream cupcakes with Connecticut Sun guard Kalana Greene under the direction of NoRA Cupcake Co.’s Carrie Carella and Phil Ouellette Monday afternoon.
The field trip was the latest installment of the Youth Services Bureaus “Make Time” meeting series, during which city children meet with local leaders to discuss youth leadership issues.
NoRA opens up on its only day off for Make Time and donates the cupcakes to the meetings.
Macdonough Principal Jon Romeo said the girls had shown outstanding “SURFS” values – Self-responsibility, Understanding, Respect, Fairness and Safety.
“We try to nurture these qualities in our kids,” said Romeo. “These are qualities we see in these young ladies.”
The Greene and the girls ribbed each other playfully on who made the best and worst cupcakes and, as they sat down to fresh pastries and cold milk, talked about the importance of math and where the girls wanted to go to college.
Justin Carbonella, the YSB director, was shocked to learn that none of the five had yet considered the University of Connecticut, his and Greene’s alma mater.
